Michael FitzGerald has been involved in the English Language Teaching industry for more than 30 years. Graduating from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada in 1994 with a Bachelors Honours degree in Philosophy, Michael went on to receive his pre-service teaching qualifications in Ireland with the Recognized English Language Schools Association (RELSA). Michael then taught English in Russia and Greece before returning to Canada in 1996 to gain a post-graduate qualification in Communications' Studies. While studying for the post-graduate qualification, Michael continued to teach English in different Canadian cities, designing and running specialty courses in Business English and pronunciation classes. He also worked full-time for a large public relations agency doing events management and community charity programs. From 1997 to 1999, Michael effectively managed an English language training program for the Canadian Government (LINC) that helped new immigrants and refugees settle in Canada, including many South East Asian language learners.
In 1999, Michael left the Canadian Government program in Canada to complete his in-service teaching diploma from Cambridge University (DELTA), while teaching young learners, business and legal English. After graduating, Michael went on to train teachers in Spain and the Czech Republic with International TEFL Certificate, and then became Head of Teacher Training for a Trinity College London program for two years.
In 2005, Michael joined TEFL International as Director of Public Relations, a lead trainer and teacher training curriculum designer for many European and Asian TEFL International franchise locations. From 2008 – 2010, Michael was Academic Director of North Asia teacher training, setting up and delivering training programs and training centers in Korea, Japan and China. In 2011, Michael took on the role of Academic Training Director for Central America, overseeing training programs in Costa Rica and Nicaragua for TEFL International.
Michael is a career ELT professional who has trained and observed thousands of teachers all over Europe, Asia and Latin America. He has also effectively: managed children’s summer camps in Spain (with over 200 children per camp); hosted an on-line “Ask-the-Expert” business English forum in Spanish; held a year appointed post as Director of Entertainment / Educational activities for Carleton University; and served on the TESOL Spain Board of Directors (as Special Projects Officer). Michael has set up training centers all over the world for many private training institutes, and for governments and universties throughout Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan & Cambodia, and NGO's such as UNESCO and student organizations such as AIESIC (UK). Michael is currently Managing Director & Lead Trainer for TEFL International Krabi in South East Asia.
